Die Susi bläst das Saxophon Foxtrot (Nelson - Zerlett) Tanz Orchester (Paul Godwin ?) Derby D.O. 5533a Berlin, c. late 1928 The tune is recorded with a range up to almost 11.000 Hz - great for a 1928 record! Auf den ersten Blick könnte man meinen hier handele es sich um eine Lindström Aufnahme. Das Lindström L, sowie D.O. (was Derby -Odeon heißen könnte) weißen darauf hin. Allerdings findet sich im Spiegel der Platte noch der Stempel "Mech. Cop. 1928" - und das ist nunmal der Lizenzstempel (für das elektrische Aufnahmeverfahren an GE) der Deutschen Grammophon...... Nun fand ich im Netz ein Photo des gleichen Titels auf Derby, allerdings ausgewiesen als G5533b sowie ohne das Lindström L....... Ab 1928 wurden die Derby Platten nur noch von der Grammophon und Lindström produziert (bei den 25cm Derbys zuvor waren u.a. auch noch Homokord und Vox dabei). Vermutlich wurde dieser Titel, sowie die andere Seite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ony8owfvZ9Q bei der Grammophon aufgenommen. Sowohl die Grammophon, als auch Lindström pressten aber Platten von der Aufnahme. Dieses Exemplar also bei Lindström, weswegen die Buchstabenfolge geändert, und das Lindström L zugefügt wurde. Für eine Schachmeister Aufnahme vermisse ich seine Violine - es hört sich eher nach dem Paul Godwin Orchester an. Die Aufnahmequalität ist faszinierend - Die Höhen sind bis fast 11.000 Hz aufgenommen - fast unglaublich für eine Aufnahme von 1928.... ! Today's video features a song from the 1930 movie "Einbrecher" starring Lilian Harvey, Willy Fritsch and Heinz Rühmann. "Ein Liebelei, so nebenbei!" could be translated as "A little flirt on the side".... The early 1930s were the era of multilingual movie productions. Because dubbing techniques were still under development, movies would be shot scene by scene in different languages - sometimes with the same actors or with actors popular in their respective countries.... The brightest star of this fascinating era in movie history was Lilian Harvey. Anglo-German Lilian Harvey (1906-1968) was undoubtedly the greatest European movie star in the early 1930s. She starred simultaneaously in German, French and English versions of her movies. Together with Willy Fritsch she was the "dream couple" of German cinema - Henri Garat, being his equivalent in French productions. She also starred with Charles Boyer and Laurence Olivier in his first movie (The temporary widow/Hokus Pokus - 1930). With a popularity reaching from Lisbon to Istanbul several American studios tried to lure the star to Hollywood... In fact the Ufa Studios in Babelsberg (near Berlin) were more worried about keeping Lilian Harvey under contract than about loosing Marlene Dietrich to Paramount... In 1933 Lilian Harvey left for Hollywood but her movies made at Fox (and one for Columbia) proved to be a disappointment. Furthermore her fiancé - the director Paul Martin - was only given oen movie to direct and was miserable in Hollywood. After walking out of "George White's Scandals (which made Alice Faye a star) - Lilian Harvey returned to Germany in 1935, starring in Schwarze Rosen/Les roses noires/Black Roses (aka Did I betray?). She continued to make succesful movies for UFA until 1939 ("Glückskinder/Les gais lurons" and "Sieben Ohrfeigen" most notably). Increasingly ill at ease in Germany she left for France in 1939 where she starred in 2 further movies : "Sérénade" and "Miquette". As war came to France she went to the USA and settled down in Hollywood hoping to continue her career. She never filmed again. She did work for the red cross as well as in the theatre. After the war she toured Europe for a while and went to live on the French riviera where she opened a shop. She occasionally starred in plays but her name was forever connected with the early 1930's, when she really was "das süsseste Mädel der Welt" (the sweetest girl in the world). Today her song "Das gibt's nur einmal"/"Seraît-ce un rêve?"/"Just once for all time" continues to charm film fans and record collectors. She died in 1968. The band featured on this fine recording is the anonymous Odeon Tanzorchester. Interesting is also the matrix number : Qu 251 - which according to the Lotz matrix lists - points to "request" records or matrixes used from other companies such as Gloria or Parlophon. The French version of the movie "Einbrecher" was called "Flagrant Délit" and featured Henry Garat and Blanche Montel in the leading roles. (Lilian Harvey was to become Garat's "steady" partner from "Le Chemin du Paradis" onwards). The songs were translated in French and became quite succesful. This video features the French version of "Eine Liebelei, so nebenbei !" - called "Si c'est ça l'amour" (If that is what love is) recorded by Adrien Lamy. Adrien Lamy (1896-1940) was a popular singer in the late 1920s and early 1930s who also appeared in a dozen or so movies... He was the son of actor Charles Lamy (1857-1940). Today Adrien Lamy is completely forgotten - if he is remembered at all it is because he recorded "J'ai deux amours" with Josephine Baker. His father was a casualty of war. Adrien Lamy himself died a few weeks later. The video features sheet music of Lilian Harvey/Henry Garat songs from the early 1930s combined with pictures from the movies or Lilian Harvey.
